Falls Prevention & Home Safety in Halifax and Across Nova Scotia

“In Canada, falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations and injury deaths among people aged 65 or older. Injuries from falls reduce older adults’ quality of life, increase caregiver demands, and precipitate admissions into long-term care.”

“Approximately 52% of falls resulting in hospitalization occurred in a household residence.” Surveillance report on falls among older adults in Canada (March 2022)

At Thrive Therapy, we provide fall prevention and home safety assessments for seniors in Halifax, BedfordDartmouthSackville, and across Nova Scotia. Our experienced Occupational Therapists provide in-home assessments to help reduce fall risks, recommend equipment and modifications, and promote independence so older adults can age safely in place.

Our Occupational Therapists understand the unique challenges seniors face as they age and we work closely with each client to ensure their home is a safe, functional space—both now and into the future.

During your in-home assessment, the OT will:

  • Review your daily routines, lifestyle goals, and level of independence
  • Evaluate current and future functional abilities
  • Consider the support you receive from caregivers, family, or community services

Stay Independent. Stay Safe.

These in-home assessments are designed to identify fall risks before they happen and provide customized strategies to support aging in place with confidence and dignity.

What Is a Falls Prevention Assessment?

Our comprehensive Falls Prevention Assessment is performed by a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT) with expertise in working with seniors and aging adults. The evaluation includes:

  • Identifying physical, behavioural, and environmental factors that increase fall risk in seniors
  • Assessing strength, balance, coordination, and the ability to perform daily activities
  • Reviewing the home for fall hazards such as loose rugs, poor lighting, or unsafe stairways
  • Evaluating the use of mobility aids (like walkers or canes) and recommending adjustments if needed

These assessments are essential for older adults living alone, seniors recovering from surgery, or anyone noticing changes in their mobility, vision, or balance.
