Occupational Therapy for Toileting Skills in Children

Supporting Independence, Comfort, and Confidence in Daily Routines

At Thrive Therapy, our pediatric Occupational Therapists work with children and families to support toileting independence in a developmentally appropriate, compassionate, and evidence-based way. We understand that toileting can be a challenging skill for many children – and we’re here to help!

Remember:

Toileting delays are not a sign of laziness or bad behaviour. They often reflect deeper challenges that can be addressed with the right supports. Occupational Therapists are trained to help uncover the root causes and build a plan that fits your child’s unique needs.

Why Do Children Struggle with Toileting?

Toileting involves more than just “going to the bathroom.” Toileting is a complex life skill that requires coordination between the body, brain, and emotions. Many children experience delays or difficulties in toilet training for a variety of reasons — and it’s more common than most families realize.
Children may experience delays in toilet training due to:

  • Body awareness (interoception)
    • Recognizing the need to go to the bathroom (bladder/bowel signals)
  • Sensory processing
  • Motor planning and coordination
  • Routine and habit formation
  • Communication and emotional regulation
  • Developmental delays
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)
  • Physical disabilities or motor delays
  • Anxiety or past negative experiences
  • Difficulty with transitions and routines

How Occupational Therapy Can Help

Occupational Therapists assess each child’s unique strengths and challenges. Our goal is to build the foundational skills and routines necessary for successful toileting – with dignity and support. We may help with:

Toileting Readiness

  • Identifying physical and emotional readiness signs
  • Creating personalized toileting routines
  • Gradual desensitization for children who are fearful or resistant

Sensory Processing Support

  • Addressing fear of flushing sounds, toilet seats, wiping sensations, etc.
  • Creating sensory-friendly bathroom routines
  • Supporting the development of Interoceptive awareness (recognizing the need to go)

Motor Skills Development

  • Practicing clothing management (pulling pants up/down, buttons/zippers)
  • Supporting balance and strength for sitting on the toilet
  • Teaching proper wiping techniques

Visual Supports & Routine Building

  • Using visual schedules, social stories, and timers
  • Building consistent bathroom routines at home and school
  • Creating toilet training plans that are clear and achievable

Family and Caregiver Coaching

  • Collaborating with families and educators
  • Providing practical strategies and training
  • Respecting cultural values and developmental expectations

Collaboration is Key!

We believe that successful toileting is a team effort. Our therapists work closely with parents, educators, and caregivers to ensure consistency and progress across all environments – home, daycare, school, and community.
