Emotional Regulation Support

For Children & Youth in Nova Scotia

At Thrive Therapy, our Occupational Therapists provide tailored emotional regulation support for children and youth in Halifax, Bedford, Sackville, Dartmouth, Antigonish, Truro, and throughout Nova Scotia. We work closely with families to help children manage emotions, build resilience, and thrive in daily life.

Emotional regulation is the ability to manage and respond to emotional experiences in a healthy and adaptive way. For children, learning to regulate emotions can be a difficult and ongoing process. When a child struggles with emotional regulation, it can affect their social interactions, academic performance, and overall well-being. These challenges may present as meltdowns, aggression, withdrawal, anxiety, or difficulty controlling impulses.

Is This Service a Good Fit for My Child/Youth?

This service is for children and youth who are having difficulty understanding, expressing, or managing their emotions in daily life. We support children who may:

  • Have big emotional reactions or meltdowns that feel hard to predict or manage
  • Become easily overwhelmed, frustrated, or upset by changes or transitions
  • Feel anxious or worried and have trouble calming their body and mind
  • React strongly to everyday challenges at home, school, or in the community
  • Have emotional responses that impact friendships, learning, or family routines

This service is helpful for families who want practical tools, coaching, and support in building self-regulation skills so their child can feel more confident, calm, and successful in the environments that matter most to them.

Common Signs of Emotional Regulation Challenges in Children:

Children facing emotional regulation difficulties may exhibit:

  • Frequent tantrums or outbursts
  • Low frustration tolerance
  • Difficulty with transitions
  • Anxiety or fearfulness
  • Impulsivity
  • Social communication challenges
  • Avoidance

If you’ve noticed your child struggling with emotional regulation, an Occupational Therapist can provide a personalized assessment and develop a plan to help them thrive. By supporting your child in learning to manage their emotions, you are giving them the tools to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and resilience.

What families notice before coming to Thrive

Families often share that their child:

  • Has frequent emotional outbursts, shutdowns, or “big feelings”
  • Struggles with transitions or unexpected changes
  • Acts impulsively or withdraws when overwhelmed
  • Finds it hard to talk about or understand their emotions

These challenges may begin to affect school participation, friendships, and daily routines at home.

After working together

After working with our therapists, over time, families often notice that their child:

  • Is better able to recognize, name, and communicate their feelings
  • Has more tools to calm their body and emotions
  • Shows increased confidence and self-awareness
  • Experiences fewer or shorter emotional outbursts
  • Participates more positively in home, school, and social activities

Parents and caregivers also feel more supported, gaining strategies they can use day-to-day to help their child thrive across environments.
