Trauma-informed Counselling

Background

Mark and Sarah sought counselling following a traumatic event that had a significant impact on both their individual well-being and their relationship. While each partner was coping with the experience in different ways, they found themselves becoming increasingly disconnected from one another.

Sarah reported heightened anxiety, emotional overwhelm, and difficulty trusting that things would improve. Mark described feeling emotionally shut down and uncertain how to support his partner while managing his own stress. Communication had become strained, with frequent misunderstandings, increased conflict, and feelings of isolation for both partners.

The couple’s goal was to strengthen their relationship, improve communication, and learn how to navigate the effects of trauma together.

Assessment

A counsellor completed a comprehensive assessment that included:

What the assessment included

Individual and joint interviews
Exploration of the impact of trauma on each partner
Review of relationship strengths and challenges
Assessment of communication patterns and conflict resolution strategies
Identification of coping skills, support systems, and treatment goals

What We learned

The assessment revealed that the trauma had affected each partner differently, leading to a cycle in which one partner sought increased emotional connection while the other withdrew. Although both remained committed to the relationship, they lacked the tools to effectively support one another through their recovery.

Intervention Plan

A tailored couples counselling plan was developed to address both the impact of trauma and the relationship challenges that had emerged.
