Background

The Johnson Family sought family counselling due to increasing conflict at home, communication difficulties, and challenges navigating a recent family transition. Parents reported frequent arguments between siblings (in particular around sharing shared items such as the TV and IPAD), escalating tensions during daily routines, and difficulty resolving disagreements in a productive way.

Their 12-year-old child had become increasingly withdrawn, while their 9-year-old child often expressed frustration through emotional outbursts. Parents felt overwhelmed and concerned that family relationships were becoming strained.

The family wanted support to improve communication, strengthen relationships, and create a more positive home environment.

Assessment

A counsellor completed a family-centred assessment that included:

What the assessment included

Interviews with parents and children
Exploration of family strengths, stressors, and routines
Assessment of communication patterns and conflict resolution strategies
Identification of individual and family goals
Observation of family interactions during sessions

What We learned

The assessment identified that family members cared deeply about one another but were struggling to communicate their needs effectively. Stress related to recent life changes had contributed to misunderstandings, emotional reactions, and difficulty solving problems together.

A tailored family counselling plan was developed to improve communication, strengthen relationships, and support healthy family functioning.
